The Super Fruit

The jackfruit is the largest edible fruit. It can weigh up to 35 kilos. As many as 250 jackfruits can be seen growing on a single tree. The fruit generally grows on the branches, but if the tree is old, it grows in clusters on the trunk and sometimes even on the roots.
The jackfruit is eaten in various forms, especially in South India. The raw fruit is cooked as a vegetable or sliced and fried as chips. The ripe fruit is eaten on its own or pulped and sweetened with sugar to make a dessert or preserved as jam, pickle or jelly.
Jackfruit seeds are a gourmet's delight. The outer rind of the fruit and the leaves make nutritious cattle feed. The leaves are also used to fashion plates and cups.

The termite-resistant wood or timber of the jackfruit tree is used to make quality furniture.

User's Comments

R. Waterlander: I know Jack Fruit grows at lots of places, Is it sold in Europe? How and where? Is there any organisation who would like to work together businesswise with me? Can you import the seeds? I would like to see if it's possible to create a business with local people who either are homeless or working together with a children's home and make a link with elderly people who are left alone. Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Rob Waterlander
